Day 4 (9/23/2014) Vatican City

One of the elaborate ceilings in the Sistine Chapel

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Vatican City

One of the many works of art in the Sistine Chapel. There was so much information passed to us that I don't recall art work names or artists, except for the main Michelangelo painting, which we weren't allowed to photograph

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Vatican City

Tour group exiting St. Peter's Basilica with the Pope's residence in the background

A Swiss Guard stands guard at an entrance in Vatican City

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

This is the site of the Arena Maximus, where Gladiators competed. Guides told us that recent films on Ancient Rome are mostly untrue, but the older films, like Ben Hur, were closer to the truth

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Our first entrance into the Colosseum

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

The Arch of Constantine (Italian: Arco di Costantino)

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

I took a lot of photos of the Ancient Roman Colosseum

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Another view of the Ancient Roman Colosseum

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

The arch openings in the Colosseum once contained marble statues, but were all removed and recycled 100's of years ago. At that time the Colosseum was used as a quarry

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Walking into this ancient coliseum, the layout was not unlike a football stadium today

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Inside the Colosseum, the bottom center of the photo, is where the Emperor sat

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

The floor of the Colosseum is missing, but you can see were the participants (both man and animal) stayed until they were called to the arena

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

It's amazing to think that the ancient people were so advanced that they could build a stadium that is still the pattern 2000 years later

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Joyce and I at the entrance with the stadium in the background

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

A wider view of the Colosseum

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

Among the ruins are active buildings

Day 4 (9/23/2014) Rome, Italy

I can't recall what these ruins were, but it appears that they were meant to keep human or animals contained

Day 5 (9/24.2014) Orvieto, Italy

Orvieto in the Umbria region, sits near the top of a mountain. We rode a funicular and a small bus to get to this beautiful town with wonderful views

Day 5 (9/24.2014) Orvieto, Italy

A typical street scene in Orvieto

Day 5 (9/24.2014) Orvieto, Italy

Joyce in front of a colorful ceramic shop. It would have been nice to have spent more time in this town

Day 5 (9/24.2014) Orvieto, Italy

The facade of this beautiful Cathedral of Orvieto. This church is in the main town square. I also noticed that many of the churches had scaffolding on them

Day 5 (9/24.2014) Orvieto, Italy

Another street scene in Orvieto

Day 5 (9/24.2014) Orvieto, Italy

A straight-on view of the Cathedral of Orvieto. In the audio, inside the church, it said that this church, like many that we saw, evolved over many years and used architects/artists from different eras to complete

Our first look at the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Pisa, Italy

The Baptistry on the Piazza del Duomo

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Pisa, Italy

The Sun was in the wrong postion for a really good shot of holding up the tower, but everyone was still being creative attempting to get something different

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Pisa, Italy

It seemed the closer we got to it, the tower didn't look that much out of kilter. We only had enough time here to take pictures, bathroom break and a quick snack

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Pisa, Italy

For what seemed like an out-of-the-way place, there were a lot of people visiting this site and the grounds were well kept

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Pisa, Italy

Near the base of the tower, I could really get the sense of the tower being out of balance.

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Between Pisa & Venice

I took a lot of shots out of the bus window and many had reflections in them, but some came out pretty good, like this one

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Venice, Italy

The ride to Venice (Lido) brought us by the main island of Venice. Venice is truly unique, but so were all the places that we visited

Day 7 (9/26/2014) Venice, Italy

I believe this was prior to docking at the Lido port. Lido is where we stayed the 2 nights in Venice

By afternoon, all the main walkways were crowded

Day 8 (9/27/2-14) Venice, Italy

Day 8 (9/27/2-14) Venice, Italy

A photo along our Gondola ride

Day 8 (9/27/2-14) Venice, Italy

Since the main streets were so crowded, Joyce and I walked up and down the narrow alleys. All led to various canals. I wished now that we would have fought the crowds on the Grand Canal as several in our group saw the George Clooney wedding party

Day 8 (9/27/2-14) Venice, Italy

A Venice alleyway

Day 8 (9/27/2-14) Venice, Italy

A Venice canal

Day 8 (9/27/2-14) Venice, Italy

Sitting in the front seat of the bus as we rolled up toward Assisi, I took this photo through the front window

A wider view of the square and castle

Day 9 (9/28/2014) Assisi, Umbria, Italy

More steps, these appear to be built within the last few hundred years

Day 9 (9/28/2014) Assisi, Umbria, Italy

Again architecture that is a photographer' dream

Day 11 (9/30/2014) Isle of Capri, Italy

Here we are at the restaurant and we got an idea how people get to their hilltop houses, with small cars and on narrow winding, hilly roads. I believe our group used 4 vans to get to the restaurant
